SAN JOSE, Antique – La Salle sophomore Nursing student and ace swimmer, Dominique Balinas, of the NOPSSCEA team turned 18 yesterday and celebrated her debut by picking up four gold medals from women’s 100m and 50m fly, and 200m and 400m individual medley in the swimming competition of the 2009 Western Visayas PRISAA at the Binirayan Sports Complex swimming pool here.

The gold medals, Balinas said, were her gifts to herself and to the team, as NOPSSCEA captured eight golds, six silvers, and nine bronzes in the first day of swimming events.

Tanpinco fires 59, takes lead
in Southern Ladies Am golf

CAGAYAN DE ORO – Defending champion Anya Tanpinco sizzled with an eagle and four birdies to buck a closing bogey as she shot 59 points under the Molave scoring system for a two-point lead over Korean Crystal Shin at the start of the Southern Ladies Amateur Golf Championship yesterday.

The power-hitting Tanpinco, seeking a second straight championship in the annual event, frolicked on the up-and-down 5003-yard Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club, reaching the par-4 No. 12 on her drive and sinking an eagle-putt from 20 feet.

WOF survives JKT-A at
TKP caging tourney

World of Fun opened its title campaign with a narrow victory over Johann Kendrick Tan A, 82-80, in Class A action of the 9th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Tournament Wednesday night at Tay Tung High School Po Hang gym.

WOF led the first quarter, 24-17, as Joel Deocadiz and Andy Angodung combined for 16 points, while JKT-A relied on Matt Deles, who scored seven points, to prevent the defending champs from getting far ahead.

But Atoy Salazar, GE Quizan, and Deno Soriano gave JKT-A a big headache in the second quarter as they converted their shots to give WOF a double digit lead at 50-38.
