Dauin flood damage
reaches P2.7 million

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The water pipe system in at least five barangays in the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental, was destroyed by the New Year’s eve flooding, and caused damage estimated at P2 million, Mayor Rodrigo Alanano said yesterday.

He said damage to crops and properties reached P700,000.

Alanano ordered an ocular inspection in the affected areas from Sitio Nagpantao, Malongkay Dacu down to the river of Maayong Tubig up to the shoreline, where massive destruction was noted.

He said his inspection team found out that the floods carried away several tons of boulders, and rocks, resulting to damage in infrastructure and loss of livestock.

The river channel has changed its course with big boulders scattered in the farms. Damage to livestock was estimated at P50,000, and another P50,000 to uprooted coconuts and bananas, among others.

Alanano has recommended the immediate rehabilitation of the water system of the affected barangays to prevent water-borne diseases.

He also recommended the re-channeling of the river to its original course, removal of boulders for government projects and gathering of sandy earth to rehabilitate the farm lands, aside from the relief measures.

Provincial social welfare officer Alice Lagarde was furnished with a report from Alanano’s office.
