IN DUMAGUETE
Bank clients seeking
clarification on closure

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Clients of Rural Bank of Subangdaku in Dumaguete City yesterday said they were surprised by the notice posted at the bank premises on Monday, declaring a bank holiday.

They said they also wondered why the bank stated that it is awaiting the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation to assume it without stating the reasons.

RBS depositors trooped to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Dumaguete yesterday to inquire about the status of the bank. The RBS- Dumaguete branch said it closed after experiencing massive withdrawals of deposits the past weeks.

Dauin flood damage
reaches P2.7 million

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The water pipe system in at least five barangays in the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental, was destroyed by the New Year’s eve flooding, and caused damage estimated at P2 million, Mayor Rodrigo Alanano said yesterday.

He said damage to crops and properties reached P700,000.

Alanano ordered an ocular inspection in the affected areas from Sitio Nagpantao, Malongkay Dacu down to the river of Maayong Tubig up to the shoreline, where massive destruction was noted.

Minority bloc needs
unity formula

PIMENTEL SAYS

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. yesterday said different parties and groups within the minority camp should start crafting a formula to unite and support a common presidential candidate in the 2010 elections, a press release from his office said.

Unless they join forces and rally behind a single standard bearer, it will be difficult for the minority to recapture the presidency and return to power, he added.

Pimentel said the strength of the minority can be seen in its many aspirants for the presidency.  They include Senators Manuel Villar, Loren Legarda, Mar Roxas, Panfilo Lacson and Francis Escudero, and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay.
