| The mother of Marshan Verdadero, 6, from Brgy. Binubuhan, Bago City, Negros Occidental, is seeking help from DAILY STAR readers for her son who has been diagnosed to have Beta Thalassemia and is now confined at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City.
Annabelle Verdadero, 38, said yesterday that her son son has been confined at the CLMMRH since Jan. 5.
Records from the Department of Social Welfare and Development office revealed that the patient was admitted for the chief complaint for pallor and recommended for blood transfusion.
The mother is separated from her husband, Herman Verdadero, 38, who is now in Cagayan Valley.
Annabelle went to Manila to look for a job but came back to the province to take care of her son who has suffered from the disease since he was five months old.

marker formally unveiled
The Quezon City Council passed an ordinance renaming a portion of the 11th Jamboree Street from Timog Avenue to EDSA, Barangay South Triangle, Quezon City to “GMA Network Drive”, a press release from GMA Network said.
This is to recognize the invaluable contribution of the Kapuso station on nation building and its vital support to Quezon City, it said.
Present at the official unveiling of the marker Thursday were Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte, GMA Network chairman, president, and CEO Felipe Gozon, Quezon City Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista, Quezon City councilors, and network officials.
Belmonte expressed hope that GMA will continue to be a driver of growth in Quezon City and in the country. In turn, Gozon responded, “In addition to the honor and gratitude that we feel in our hearts, every time we see the sign GMA Network Drive – it will be an inspiration for us to do better and to continue providing superior entertainment, as well as objective, responsible, and unbiased delivery of news”, the press release added.*

20 candidates joining
Hara Sang Negros tilt
Twenty candidates will join the Search for Hara Sang Negros 2008 that will highlight the 33rd Sinulog celebration of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Jan. 12 to 18, a Kabankalan press release said.
The candidates had their pictorials at the public plaza, St. Francis Xavier cathedral, Zaycoland Resort and the municipal hall. They had also a pictorial with Mayor Pedro Zayco.
Today, they will have their pictorial in swimsuits at the Mag-aso Falls in Bgry. Oringao and in the evening a pre-judging in swimwear competition will be held at the poolside of the Zaycoland Hotel and Resort, the press release said.
The talent night will be held at the city plaza for free on January 13 at 7 p.m.
On Jan. 16, the candidates will have a motorcade around the city and a courtesy call on the mayor. At 7 p.m. of the same day the Pageant and Coronation Night will be held at the K-Center.
This is the second year that Hara Sang Negros is held in Kabankalan City. The former title of the pageant was the Search for Sinulog Queen. The pageant is spearheaded for the first time by the Lions Club of Kabankalan with Rey Cordero as president, the press release added.*

9 clubs join garden show
Nine garden firms in Bacolod City joined the Bureau of Plant Industry-Plant Quarantine Service garden show that kicked off Monday and will end today, a press release from the Philippine Information Agency said.
Show official Tess Aplaon said the exhibitors include Bloomington, Country Cutlers, Mamabelle’s Organic Herbs, Pete’s Nursery and Plant clinic, Panaad Gardeners, Abraham’s Plant Nursery, Moscovado Sugar, Montaños Garden and Piantebelle.
Negros Occidental Orchid Society headed by Socorro Monfort and Negros Occidental Garden Club led by Dr. Nena Nolido tied up with the PQS to put up the show.
Doreen Dofitas discussed “Developing Plants for Landscape” with Evelyn Bautista who took up “Organic Cooking with Herbs,” at the PQS new office at Brgy. 39, Avaceña Street, the press release said.
Flower garden owner and landscaping specialist Rene Dofitas said gardening has a good market potential in the province.
Technical support will be offered to interested persons who wish to go into gardening, through Tel. No. 433-20-72 and 0917-3559-741, the press release said.
Meanwhile, identification of the species of fruit flies can now be determined here by the local quarantine office after it acquired the equipment to conduct the work. Previously, the task of specie identification is done in Iloilo City quarantine laboratory, the press release added.*
