| The National Statistics Office in Negros Occidental will start 2009 by conducting the Labor Force and the Consumer Expectations Surveys, an NSO press release said.
January is the fourth quarter round of the LFS which had October-December as reference months. The CES is a joint project of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the NSO. The BSP contracted the NSO to conduct the CES to collect comprehensive information on the business conditions of the country in the households sector.
The two surveys will continue until the end of the month covering the pre-determined sample barangays all over the Philippines. Negros Occidental has 86 sample barangays/enumeration areas for the LFS and three pre-determined sample barangays in Bacolod City for CES, the press release said.
The LFS aims to provide estimates on the levels of employment and unemployment in the country and to gather data in the economic activities of households in the country.
The CES is a household-based survey on the consumers’ assessment of their financial situation, the economic condition of the country and the overall performance of the government. It aims to generate forecasts in the direction country’s economic activity based on consumers’ outlook in the next 12 months and to provide quick and regular assessment of consumers’ outlook in terms of their income and expenditures, the press release said.
Provincial Statistics officer Fred Sollesta assures the respondents that the data gathered from the two surveys are for statistical purposes only and will be published in summary forms.
As provided by law and Executive Order No. 121, or Reorganization Act, the data will not in any way be used for investigation and law enforcement purposes, the press release added.*

Hara sang Negros
talent contest tonight
The 20 contestants in the Search for Hara Sang Negros ’09 will compete during the talent night at 7 p.m. today at the public plaza of Kabankalan, a pres release from the city said.
The event will be open to the public, Mayor Pedro Zayco Jr. said.
Rheasol Hiballes, former ABS-CBN Mag-TV Na Amiga host will be the emcee. The pageant itself is set Friday at the K-Center in Kabankalan.
Meanwhile, the Sinulog festival of the city will kick off on Sunday with a fluvial procession of the Senior.Sto. Niño from Brgy. Talubangi to Lugway, followed by a Concelebrated Mass at the city football field at 8 a.m., the press release said.
The grand tribal competition in the afternoon will be participated in by 15 contingents. At 7 p.m., there will be fireworks display followed by a concert of the Mocha and Arkans Bands at the football field, the press release added.*

Math lecture series slated
The college Math department of the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City will hold its fifth Mathematics Lecture Series on January 19 to 20, at its Santuario de La Salle, a USLS press release said.
Dr. Auxencia Limjap of De La Salle University-Manila will conduct a seminar-workshop entitled “Pursuing Transformation Through Active Learning Pedagogy in Mathematics Education.”
