Hundreds of boxers to join
nat’l amateur championship

Hundreds of boxers from different provinces in the country will converge in Bacolod City this week for the 2009 Smart National Amateur Boxing Championship, slated Jan. 17-23 at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center.

Officials from Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, led by its president, Ricky Vargas, and secretary-general Patrick Gregorio, were in Bacolod over the weekend to inspect NOMPAC and finalize the details of the tournament.

The two ABAP officials also met with Bacolod Congressman Monico Puentevalla to confirm the staging of the Boxing Congress on Jan. 22 at the L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City.

Bethany Gelle Trucking and Pueblo Rosario Athletic Club will dispute the title in the 1st Danilo Puzon Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament, 8 p.m. tomorrow at Lopue’s South Square gym.

The face-off was inevitable after both squads demolished their respective rivals in the semifinals last week.

Bethany Truckers overpowered Alvin Auto Parts, 72-65, while the Eroreco-based PRAC Waves got away with a 60-58 victory against hard-fighting Axial Engineering.

NPBC, Bago
bowlers take lead

NPBC LJP Trading MJS and Bago City Bowlers Association took the 1-2 position in the curtain raiser of the 1st Five-Man Team Friendship Open Bowling Tournament at the Super Lanes of the Goldenfield Commercial Complex in Bacolod City.

The NPBC squad shattered a three-game collection of 1,738 pinfalls to lead in the opening round, as the visiting team compiled 1,636 balls.

The Gil Villagante and Steve Po’s  pintopplers sparked 570 pinfalls in the first game and continued to soar high with 577 and 591 in the second and third outings.
