Bacolod boxers to
compete in Guam

Negrenses Mark John Ray Melligen, Jameboy Vicera, Rolando Tacuyan and Aston Francis Palicte are off to Guam today to compete in the Agana Boxing Dual Match slated Jan. 17-19.

The four boxing standouts join the RP boxing squad sent to Guam by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippine to test their performance in preparation for the 25th Southeast Asian Games slated in December in Laos. Also in the team is welterweight boxer Adonis Cabalquinto.

“We expect to win golds in this tournament which we will also use to gauge the improvement of our boxers,” national coach Bagoeño Boy Velasco, brother of Olympic silver medalist Onyok, said.

The lone female campaigner is Nesthy Petecia who will compete in the featherweight (57 kilogram).

“Of course, we expect to win gold medals but at the same, we want to know how our boxers perform,” Velasco said.

Velasco said the Agana encounter is the first international exposure calendared by the ABAP now under new leadership of businessman Manny Pangilinan.

The organizer has shouldered all the expenses for board and lodging and ticket of the RP team whose trip is also sponsored by Philippine Sports Commission and Smart.*
