Reigning national champion Negrense Anya Tanpinco will be among the top brass in ladies’ golf vying for the crown in this year’s ICTSI-Philippine Ladies Open Amateur Golf Championships when the event tees off today at the Manila Southwoods Legends Course in Carmona, Cavite.

Tanpinco will have her hands full competing against local and foreign talents, among them, defending champion Chihiro Ikeda, and three-time Junior World titlist Dottie Ardina.

The wide-open race will boil down to whoever makes the right club selection in tackling the wind, national teach coach Bong Lopez said.

Bacolod boxers to
compete in Guam

Negrenses Mark John Ray Melligen, Jameboy Vicera, Rolando Tacuyan and Aston Francis Palicte are off to Guam today to compete in the Agana Boxing Dual Match slated Jan. 17-19.

The four boxing standouts join the RP boxing squad sent to Guam by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippine to test their performance in preparation for the 25th Southeast Asian Games slated in December in Laos. Also in the team is welterweight boxer Adonis Cabalquinto.

“We expect to win golds in this tournament which we will also use to gauge the improvement of our boxers,” national coach Bagoeño Boy Velasco, brother of Olympic silver medalist Onyok, said.

Truckers, Waves
dispute crown tonight

Pueblo Rosario Athletic Club eyes history tonight by staking its claim to the title against Bethany Gelle Trucking in the Basketball Unified Sports Group-organized 1st Danilo Puzon Cup at Lopue’s South Square.

Game time is set at 8 p.m.

The PRAC Waves nipped Axial Engineering, 60-58, while the Bethany Truckers overran Alvin Auto Parts, 72-65, in the crossover semifinal paving the way for the one-game final showdown.
