Weigh-in starts at
NOMPAC today
BY NIDA BUENAFE

All roads lead to the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center today as delegates to the 2009 Smart National Open Youth and Women’s Amateur Boxing Championship report for official registration and weigh-in to finalize their entry into the tournament.

Hundreds of boxers from different areas in the country are now in Bacolod City for the weeklong event that will be ushered by grand opening rites tomorrow at the NOMPAC with boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as the guest of honor.

At stake in the tournament are 93 medals in five age-classification groups and 16 weight categories.

Talented boxers, aspiring to be the next boxing sensation, who can equal if not surpassed Pacquiao’s feat, will vie for top honors in Kids (11-12 years old), School Boys (over 13), Juniors Boys and Girls (over 15), Youth Boys and Girls (over 17), and Elite Men and Women (over 19).

Host Negros Occidental Boxing Association will be fielding more than 50 boxers in the tournament to strengthen its bid as the breeding ground of boxing talents in the country.

Contesting this claim will be the boxing teams from the cities of Himamaylan, Bago, Talisay, Cadiz and Escalante which also formed their formidable lineup for the event.

Designed to establish a solid structure of camaraderie and closer brotherhood among different boxing organization nationwide the tournament will strictly adhere to the guidelines of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.

Coordinating with ABAP in relation to the staging of the tournament is the congressional office of Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella who said that the objective of the tournament is to identify and recruit potential and talented boxers and train them to be highly competitive.

The competition will adopt the knock-out system where the winner in the preliminary and quarter finals receives one mark while the semifinalists get two marks. Victors in the final bout will be given the highest mark of three points.

In case two or more teams get an equal number of marks, placing will depend on the number of victories won in the final round.

A team or club will only be allowed one boxer per weight category.*NAB
