BY NIDA BUENAFE

All roads lead to the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center today as delegates to the 2009 Smart National Open Youth and Women’s Amateur Boxing Championship report for official registration and weigh-in to finalize their entry into the tournament.

Hundreds of boxers from different areas in the country are now in Bacolod City for the weeklong event that will be ushered by grand opening rites tomorrow at the NOMPAC with boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as the guest of honor.

At stake in the tournament are 93 medals in five age-classification groups and 16 weight categories.

Pacquiao, Hatton
50-50 split settled

MANILA – The much-awaited megabuck fight between Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao and England’s pride Ricky Hatton will push through as set on May 2 after the two fighters agreed on the original 50-50 split of the prize money.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the Los Angeles Times that Pacquiao’s advisers, especially Rex “Wakee" Salud, were able to convince the Filipino fighter to push on with the fight.

"There was a lot of confusion about why we did 50-50, but everyone now understands why this is a good deal. This thing is going to happen. Yesterday was disarray. Today, everything's back in order,” Arum said.

Truckers capture
Puzon Cup crown

Elbert Habaradas played like a champion, scoring 17 of his 21 points in the final half to secure the title for Bethany Gelle Trucking  with a convincing 80-62 against Pueblo Rosario Athletic Club in the 1st Danilo Puzon Cup/BUS Group Basketball Tournament Wednesday night at Lopue’s South Square.

The Truckers found the right combination to demolish PRAC’s offensive weapon as the Waves’ trigger man Amit Teruel was limited to 12 points with only a single three-pointer to his credit.

Spitfire Espina tried to reverse the outcome in favor of the Eroreco-based squad, sputtering with 13 points, but the rest of the team failed to deliver with Reggie Sy struggling all night and finishing with eight points.
