Close watch up
versus corruption
BY NIDA BUENAFE

At least seven government agencies in Negros Occidental are being closely watched by the Citizens Network for Good Government, with an observer from the group attending the opening of bids of projects listed in the agencies’ Annual Procurement Plan.

Included in the list are the Bacolod, Talisay and Bago offices of the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, the City Government of Bacolod, Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Bacolod City Water District, Philippine Ports Authority, and Transmission Commission, and the Social Security System.

Supervised by the office of the Bacolod Social Action Center, CNGG’s role is to prevent, if not totally eradicate corruption in public offices, which oftentimes, occur in the procurement and implementation of projects, SAC director Fr. Aniceto Buenafe said.

He added that the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines has identified corruption and greed as the major causes of poverty and backwardess in the country and CNGG is the church response to the call to address the problem.

Buenafe also called for more volunteers for CNGG stressing that monitoring of the proceedings from the procurement to the implementation of government’s projects involve various processes. He said the CNGG does not have enough personnel to monitor the procedure.*NAB
