ARB coops in Talisay
receive fertilizer aid

Twenty agrarian reform cooperatives in Talisay City received another batch of organic fertilizer assistance recently from the office of 3rd District Rep. Jose Carlos Lacson, at the turn-over rites held at Brgy. Concepcion covered court, the Provincial Agrarian Reform Office said.

Lacson told the farmer-beneficiaries that the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program is not yet finished, and the Joint Resolution without the Compulsory Acquisition will still be signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

He said that the Department of Agrarian Reform still continues to exercise its function and the Congress will address the agency’s focus after the extension with reforms is passed.

Global crisis to reduce
investments in mining

MANILA – Philippine mining, which was expecting a boom year in 2009, will instead likely see a fall in investments due largely to the global financial crisis, industry and government officials said yesterday.

“I expect a little downgrading (of investments) but we are still optimistic," said Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza at a business forum.

Horacio Ramos, head of the Mines and Geosciences Board, said the original target was for a billion dollars in mining investments this year but this would likely be downscaled to about $800 million.

8 more ‘bagsakan’
centers to open in WV

Eight "bagsakan", or drop-off centers for farm produce will be opened in Western Visayas this year, a report of the Department of Agriculture said.

After the opening of the eight new “bagsakans” in various areas in Western Visayas this year, also 22 food terminals based in barangays will be opened in the region, the DA report added.

These barangay food terminals sell basic food items such as rice, fish, vegetables and meat at prices lower by 5 to 10 percent than those sold in regular retail markets.
