8 more ‘bagsakan’
centers to open in WV

Eight "bagsakan", or drop-off centers for farm produce will be opened in Western Visayas this year, a report of the Department of Agriculture said.

After the opening of the eight new “bagsakans” in various areas in Western Visayas this year, also 22 food terminals based in barangays will be opened in the region, the DA report added. 

These barangay food terminals sell basic food items such as rice, fish, vegetables and meat at prices lower by 5 to 10 percent than those sold in regular retail markets.

The first food terminals in Region 6 have been established in Iloilo more than a year ago. 

Existing barangay “bagsakans” sell whole chicken ar P115 a kilo; pork liempo, P140; and pork kasim, P135. Also, ampalaya costs  P50 per kilo; cabbage, P35; tomatoes, P40; red onion, P60; potatoes, P40; and eggplant, P35.

DA figures show that as of Dec. 15, 2008, the agency has already helped facilitate the opening of 37 drop-off centers and 189 barangay “bagsakans” across the country.

Through the National Food Authority, 14,564 Tindahan Natin have also been opened to sell NFA rice at P18.25 per kilo in depressed communities.

As of November 2008, TN outlets have sold 10.95 million bags of NFA rice nationwide amounting to P 9.1 billion.*NLG
