Nietes breezes to semifinals
FOE, 5 OTHERS DECLARED OVER-AGE
BY NIDA BUENAFE

National juniors pool standout Gerson Nietes Jr. of Bacolod City booked himself an easy semifinals seat as he breezed through the quarterfinals yesterday after his opponent, Bonifacio Fernando from Puerto Princesa, was declared over-age in the youth boys division of the 2009 National Amateur Boxing Championship at the Negros Occidental Multipurpose Activity Center.

The age discrepancy knocked out from the tournament Nietes’ fellow training pool member Conrado Tañamor, younger brother of Olympian Harry; Bacolod City’s light flyweight John Rey Millegen, Philippine Navy’s featherweight Rene Villaluz and light welterweight Ferdie Gamo, and girls pinweight Jennemae Basico of Bacolod City.

“The large turnout of boxers for the tournament made it difficult for us to closely scrutinize each entry form submitted…this is a big lesson for us and we hope to prevent this from happening again,” tournament official Roger Fortaleza said.

Games and Amusement Board Commissioner and host NABA president Monju Guanzon said he was also dismayed to see Bacolod City’s Millegen disqualified but stressed it was the right thing to do.

A boxer who is even just a day older than the required age should not be allowed to compete. We have to do this right…we can not compromise player’s eligibility. Winning at all cost will not get us anywhere, Guanzon said.

Philippine Olympic Committee chairman and Bacolod City Congresman Monico Puentevella said the age issue among boxers competing in amateur tournaments will be taken up in today’s Boxing Congress at the L’Fisher Hotel with Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines chairman Manny Pangilinan.

Meanwhile, should Nietes win over his semis opponent Angelo Marcial, he will face the winner between Niel Bryan Unay of Northern Samar and Cadiz City’s Arman Alpar in the other semis bout today.

The over-age ruckus handed automatic semis berth to Bobet Buenaventura of Himamaylan in the juniors light flyweight, men’s featherweight Joel Orden, men’s light welterweight Bashir Sadiq of Australia, and junior girls’ Karina Jane Recaido of Bacolod City.*NAB
