BY NIDA BUENAFE

Inching closer to the finals, 2006 Asian Games gold medalist Bacoleño Joan Tipon of Philippine Army beat Baguio City’s Glecerio Catolico in the quarterfinals yesterday, outclassing the latter, 19-4.

Tipon semifinals assignment will be against Nueva Viscaya’s Joel Orden, who automatically entered the final four round after Philippine Navy’s Rene Villaluz was disqualified due to over-age.

Also advancing to the semis is Navy man light flyweight Albert Pabila, who outclassed Iligan City’s Raul Posta Jr. in their quarterfinals bout yesterday. Joining Pabila in the light flyweight semis are Jimmy Adducul of Mandaluyong, Joemarie Yuson of Cebu and Philippine Army’s Bill Vicera.

Bago City is also sending to the semis Melchor Palacios who beat fellow Bagoeño Reyman Cordova yesterday. He will face Army’s Rey Saludar today while Mandaluyong’s Larryl Jefery Gamboa will slug it out against Army’s Ernanie Disabille in the other semis bout.

Bantamweight semifinalists are Olongapo City’s Larry Abarra, Navy’s Lhyven Salazar, Masbate’s Reggie Banaag, and Army man Godfrey Castro.

Australian light welterweight Bashir Sadiq also qualified for the semis after Navy’s Ferdie Gamo’s disqualification and will face Mandaue City’s Jimmy Yallasca today while it will be another Army vs. Navy match-up in the other semis bout as Army’s Basadre faces Navy’s Jose Balido.

In kids antweight, Bacolod City’s Robel Andales will contest the finals berth against teammate Vince Christian Medel while another Bacoleño pug, Alladin Figuero takes on Puerto Princesa’s Ignacio Jeot for the other finals seat.*NAB
