One town, one sports
for Negros LGUs
BY NIDA BUENAFE

Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco yesterday pushed for the development of “One Town, One Sports” program in the province that will enable local government units to specialize in a particular sports event.

If Bago and Candoni are focused on boxing, others can concentrate in other sports like football or baseball, he said. “And if Bago would intensify its boxing trainings, maybe we can produce another Manny Pacquiao.”

Zayco, who met with Candoni Mayor Cicero Borromeo and the town’s amateur boxers at the Governor’s Office yesterday, said he has asked Vice Gov. Emilio Yulo III to supervise the “One Town, One Sports” program which will be implemented in coordination with the Department of Education.

The governor said he believes that if towns and cities in Negros Occidental will specialize in various sports events, Negrense athletes will have better chances in winning competitions.

“We don’t want our athletes to join competitions lacking the necessary preparations,” Zayco said.

Negros Occidental, a perennial frontrunner in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet, has become a training ground for a number of athletes who have excelled in various national  meets like the Palarong Pambansa, as well as in international sports events.*NLG
