BY NIDA BUENAFE

National juniors pool standout Gerson Nietes Jr. of Bacolod City booked himself an easy semifinals seat as he breezed through the quarterfinals yesterday after his opponent, Bonifacio Fernando from Puerto Princesa, was declared over-age in the youth boys division of the 2009 National Amateur Boxing Championship at the Negros Occidental Multipurpose Activity Center.

The age discrepancy knocked out from the tournament Nietes’ fellow training pool member Conrado Tañamor, younger brother of Olympian Harry; Bacolod City’s light flyweight John Rey Millegen, Philippine Navy’s featherweight Rene Villaluz and light welterweight Ferdie Gamo, and girls pinweight Jennemae Basico of Bacolod City.

Inching closer to the finals, 2006 Asian Games gold medalist Bacoleño Joan Tipon of Philippine Army beat Baguio City’s Glecerio Catolico in the quarterfinals yesterday, outclassing the latter, 19-4.

Tipon semifinals assignment will be against Nueva Viscaya’s Joel Orden, who automatically entered the final four round after Philippine Navy’s Rene Villaluz was disqualified due to over-age.

Also advancing to the semis is Navy man light flyweight Albert Pabila, who outclassed Iligan City’s Raul Posta Jr. in their quarterfinals bout yesterday. Joining Pabila in the light flyweight semis are Jimmy Adducul of Mandaluyong, Joemarie Yuson of Cebu and Philippine Army’s Bill Vicera.

Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco yesterday pushed for the development of “One Town, One Sports” program in the province that will enable local government units to specialize in a particular sports event.

If Bago and Candoni are focused on boxing, others can concentrate in other sports like football or baseball, he said. “And if Bago would intensify its boxing trainings, maybe we can produce another Manny Pacquiao.”

Zayco, who met with Candoni Mayor Cicero Borromeo and the town’s amateur boxers at the Governor’s Office yesterday, said he has asked Vice Gov. Emilio Yulo III to supervise the “One Town, One Sports” program which will be implemented in coordination with the Department of Education.
