IN DUMAGUETE
Student ‘gang-raped,’
1 of 4 suspects nabbed

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

A 19-year-old co-ed in Dumaguete City was abducted and gang-raped by four men, one whom she was able to identify, Wednesday.

Maritess (not her real name) told the police that at around 10 p.m. she was waiting for a ride at her boarding house in Dumaguete, when she noticed a group of about four males, who suddenly approached her.

She said that the men covered her mouth with a handkerchief that smelled of something like alcohol that made her weak and dizzy.

But before passing out, she said she recognized one of the suspects as Paul (not his real name), an ex-boyfriend of her roommate, Lucy (also not her real name).

Maritess said she was forced inside a Fortuner SUV, and made to sit in the back between two of the suspects, who were arguing where to take her. But she said that while still conscious, she grabbed her cellphone and dialed at random any number she could.

She said she was able to contact her boardmates, including Lucy, who later said she identified the voice of her ex-boyfriend in the background.

Maritess said the suspects covered her face and mouth again with the handkerchief, which police believe was treated with a chemical such as chloroform.

She said she regained consciousness several hours later and found herself lying outside the gate of her rented apartment.

She said she also noticed some of her personal belongings gone.

The girl was brought to the hospital where a medico-legal report concluded that she had been sexually abused.

The police arrested Paul later, but his three other companions are still at large.

Criminal charges were filed against Paul and the three other John Does.*JFP
