Cops need gun
safety retraining
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Police personnel in Negros Oriental must undergo a regular refresher course on proper gun handling and gun safety laws to become more efficient in the performance of their functions and duties, Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas said Thursday, after a gun safety seminar for barangay officials of Valencia, Negros Oriental.

Lawas said that even policemen need a refresher on the provisions of laws as many of them lack knowledge in carrying and using guns in the line of duty.

During a previous discussion with Negros Oriental provincial police director Senior Supt. Augusto Marquez Jr., he said, they agreed to conduct a refresher course on gun safety and firearms laws for all police personnel in the province.

Lawas also reiterated that a barangay captain or any individual can carry a firearm so long as he is qualified, and meets the requirements for the possession and use of a gun.

Before his assignment as deputy provincial police director for operations in Negros Oriental, Lawas was the regional chief of the Firearms, Explosives, Security Agencies and Guards Supervisory Section of the Philippine National Police in Region 7.

During his stint as FESAGSS-7 chief, the unit copped national awards for its accomplishments.

Lawas was recently assigned to head the Regional Service Support Group of the PNP Regional Office 7 and is the camp commander of Camp Sergio Osmeña, the regional police headquarters in Central Visayas.*JFP
