overall championship

Topping the Kids division and finishing 1-2 in the Junior Girls category, host Bacolod City lived up to the expectations of the home crowd as they romped off last night with the overall championship honors and the P20,000 cash prize in the 2009 SMART National Amateur Boxing Championships at the Negros Occidental Multipurpose Activity Center.

Gerson Nietes Jr. did not disappoint his fellow Bacoleños as he took the gold in Youth boys light flyweight by outscoring, 13-5, Cadiz City’s Arman Altar while Elijah Ray Guanzon settled for silver in Youth bantam after bowing to Cebu City’s Dave Peñalosa.

Most of Bacolod ’s points came from the Kids division with antweight Robel Andalez and powderweight Joren Labordo bagging the gold while light kiddie weight Jerry Amante, kiddie weight Earl Jean Cesar Hermedalla, and lightweight Remcar Macoja settled for silver to deliver the needed points for the host team.

Karina Recaido gave Bacolod another gold in Junior Girls pinweight while Khristy Jana, and Stiffany Millegen slug it out in the finals to assure the home team the gold and silver in girls light flyweight.

Another golden finish for Bacolod jersey was courtesy of RP women’s team mainstay Mitchelle Martinez who subdued her taller and bigger opponent Ronuen Sofla from Baguio.

Philippine Army finished second overall behind the golden finishes of Bacoleño Joan Tipon, light flyweight Bill Vicera, flyweight Rey Saludar, bantamweight Godfrey Castro, lightweight Charly Suarez, light welterweight Genebert Basadre, and middleweight Jose Antioso.

Third place overall was Bago City with most of its gold medals coming from the Kids division courtesy of Charlie Panez, Ronel Tagamolila, Oliver Cordova and Christian Cordova. Youth boys pinweight Rogen Ladon added another gold to Bago’s haul by beating Pacman GenSan’s Roldan Boncales.

Davao City, on the other hand, topped the School Boys division with John Vincent Moralde winning the gold and Ian Jay Gallardo with silver. Zamboanga A finished second and Negros Oriental, third.

Top honors in Junior Boys went to Pacman General Santos Team with Bacolod finishing firs runner-up and Tagbilaran, second runner-up.

Misamis Oriental boxers emerged on top in Youth Boys followed by Bacolod A in second place and Cebu in third place.

Elite Men championship was capture by the Philippine Army as the Philippine Navy settled for the second spot and UP Baguio at third. The Army Team also took the top honor in Elite Women relegating to second place UP Baguio and host Bacolod at third.

Iloilo girls finished first in Youth Girls followed by UP Baguio and Himamaylan.

All top three winners receive gold, silver, and bronze medals and cash prizes from corporate sponsor SMART.*NAB
