Implement rights pact
with NDF, gov’t urged

Human rights group KARAPATAN in Central Visayas yesterday called on the government to implement its human rights accord with the National Democratic Front, after the death of civilians in an ambush by the New People’s Army in Negros Occidental last week.

Karapatan, in a press statement, said the government should stop stalling the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Laws, because of increasing casualties and human rights violations.

It also said it is condemnable enough that this civil strife has exposed more and more civilians to crossfire, especially that unarmed critics and activists become targets of military attacks.

No-El stand must be clarified

BY MARICAR ARANAS

Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg.Or., 1st District) said yesterday she is hopeful that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will clarify her stand on the no-election issue in her State of the Nation Address on Monday.

Limkaichong said the no-election issue has brought a lot of doubts and speculations from different sectors who seek to extend the term of the President.

She believes that there will be an election in 2010, with the coming out of several national figures who wish to be elected as the next chief executive of the country.

versus illegal drugs

BY RENE GENOVE

The Regional Peace and Order Council in Central Visayas has declared a “total all-out” war against illegal drugs.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-7 regional director, Randy Pedroso, in his report at the recent RPOC-7 meeting said that of the 3,003 barangays in Central Visayas, 671 have been affected by the drug problem.

Of the 291 drug-affected barangays in Cebu, only five have been cleared. Bohol has 256 drug affected barangays and 80 of them have already been cleared.
