Officials and selected residents of Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental generally reacted positively to the ninth and final State-Of-The-Nation-Address delivered by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the joint session of Congress yesterday.

Local officials said that Arroyo, while having so many accomplishments to speak, still has a lot to do before she ends her term in June 2010.

“I congratulate President Arroyo for a job well done. It is undeniable that she has done a lot for the country, however, work continues and she has to lead the way,” Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices, who was among the mayors from Negros Oriental who attended the SONA, said..

Charter change plan’

About 100 members of a newly-formed group called the Affirmative Action for Good Governance gathered at the Quezon Park in Dumaguete City yesterday, to stage a rally against the constituent assembly, which they believe was one of the highlights of the President’s State of the Nation Address.

William Ablong, one of its organizers, said the group was created exclusively to fight the ConAss. Ablong, who is the Dumaguete agriculturist, however, said he could not join the rally because he is in office.

The Department of Science and Technology-Technology Application Institute will hold its 2009 Visayas Island Invention Festival-Contest October 2 to 4. 

The Visayas Cluster Invention Contest features categories on Outstanding Invention (Tuklas Award), Outstanding Utility Model, Outstanding  Industrial Design, Outstanding Creative Research (Likha Award) and the Outstanding Student Creative Research (Sibol Award). 

First prize winners will get P15,000 and the second and third prize winners will get P10,000 and P5,000, respectively.
