Aklan farmers get DA help

The Department of Agriculture in Region 6 served a total of 321 Aklan farmers during a recent caravan of government services led by the Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas, a DA press release said.

The DA said it provided technical consultation on rice, corn, high value commercial crops and livestock to the farmers, particularly on intervention programs.

DA intervention programs include those in fertilizer, irrigation, education and extension, loans and agricultural credits, dryers and post-harvest facilities and seeds or stocks.

Some Aklan farmers were consulted on prevailing pest and diseases occurrence in their fields and in locations specific interventions of the DA in the province, the press release said.

Remelyn Recoter, DA regional technical director for operations, also turned over P1.4 million for farm-to-market roads to Gov. Carlito Marquez for the municipalities of Banga and Numancia, Aklan.

Recoter said the amount represent the 15 percent first tranche of release of the total P10.5 million intended for the construction, and repair of various FMR’s in  the two municipalities.

Under its high value commercial crops program the DA also distributed assorted vegetable seeds to 117 farmers.

The beneficiaries were also given technical assistance on how to grow “Pinakbet” vegetables and were advised to intensify backyard gardening to improve nutritional food for their families, the press release also said.*
