The task of hoisting the Visayas’ banner in the 6th Shakey’s V-League tournament in Manila is now in the hands of University of St. La Salle Lady Stingers who will face SSC tomorrow in their first match at The Arena in San Juan.
This was after they witnessed how the San Sebastian College demolished San Jose Recoletos of Cebu in three sets yesterday.
The La Sallians are scheduled to play against SSC at 4 p.m. tomorrow, following the 2 p.m. game between Far Eastern University and USJ-R. After the USLS vs. SSC match-up, it will be Adamson University’s turn to test the strength of the University of Santo Tomas Lady Tigers.
USLS coach Roger Banzuela is optimistic that the Bacolod team will be able to hold its ground against the Manila squads.
The La Salle team, the nucleus of which played for the Western Visayas squad that won the national PRISAA crown last month in Naga City, will be a worthy opponent against their counterparts from the Big City.
Bannered by Jade and Kay Aplasca, Era Shane Celis, Sherly June Denila, Gianes Dolar , Sheryl Silva and Realyn Valeriano, the team, along with USJ-R were tapped to represent Visayas in the Shakey’s national tournament.
After tomorrow’s game against SSC, the USLS’ volleybelles will tackle Adamson on May 24 at 2 p.m. and against FEU on May 26. The game against UST is scheduled on May 28 while the encounter against USJ-R will on June 2.
Meanwhile, USJR failed to match up well against SSC yesterday, at the start of the quarterfinal round, at it succumbed to a lopsided three-straight set defeat, 8-25, 9-25, 15-25.
Led by Laurence Ann Latigay, who delivered 16 kills, the Lady Stags’ lineup was boosted by the presence of Thai import Jaroensri Bualee and SSC mainstay Rysabelle Devanadera.
Failing to get past the blockers of SSC, the team from Cebu yielded after 56 minutes.
So dominant were the Lady Stags against their rivals from Cebu that they held USJR to just 17 points in the first two sets before allowing USJR to get away with some points in the third set.*NAB
