Candoni Mayor Cicero Borromeo, 64, suffered from a stroke Sunday night and underwent brain surgery at the Pablo O. Torre Medical Center (Riverside) in Bacolod City Monday night, Dr. Melvin Ibañez said yesterday.
Borromeo was hosting a radio program over DYEZ at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday when he suffered from severe dizziness and was vomiting as he was rushed to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center.
Borromeo suffered from brain infarction due to hypertension, Ibañez, the mayor’s attending physician, said.
The mayor who is diabetic and hypertensive had not come in for consultation for 10 months, the doctor said.
Ibañez said they had difficulty finding a neurosurgeon because the Bacolod-based ones were all out of the country, so a surgeon from Iloilo had to be brought in to operate on Borromeo, who was transferred to the Riverside hospital.
Borromeo underwent a ventriculostomy to relieve the edema or swelling of the brain, Ibañez said.
A shunt was a created to drain the fluid compressing the brain, he explained.
Borromeo remains at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and strictly no visitors are allowed, the doctor added.
The mayor is semi conscious but is under observation for the next 72 hours, Ibañez said.
“His vital signs are stable but we don’t know the extent of the motor and sensory damage to the patient yet,” the doctor said.
“We are hoping he will be able to recover in due time,” Ibañez added.
Borromeo’s wife has arrived from the United States to be with him.*CPG
