The Barangay Liptong Small Coconut Farmers Association is supplying virgin coconut oil to cope with the present demand OF 220 liters every month from Boracay, and the cities of Bacolod and Cebu.
Provincial Coconut Authority manager Brendan Trasmonte said the demand for VCO has slowly increased because of the campaign for healthy lifestyle, considering that the oil contains lauric acid.
Trasmonte said they are encouraging other VCO producers to apply for accreditation with the Bureau of Food and Drugs. The BLISCOFA is at present the only organization in Negros Oriental accredited by BFAD to produce virgin coconut oil.
Accreditation from BFAD is important to ensure safety and quality of products, and to make sure that quality standards are followed, Trasmonte said.
The Bayawan Virgin Coconut Oil and Buglas Virgin Coconut Oil are applying for accreditation with the BFAD and the PCA for a license to operate.
Negros Oriental has a total of 80,500 thousand hectares of coconut trees, with 7.8 million coconuts on the fruit bearing stage and ready for the production of coconut oil.*MA
