DepEd backs campaign
on wildlife conservation
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Department of Education in Negros Oriental pledged to support the campaign on wildlife conservation by inserting in the high school and elementary curriculum the aspect of environmental law implementation.

DepEd Supervisor Erlinda Calumpang emphasized at a forum Wednesday the relevance of wildlife and the environment should be inculcated in the minds of the young people.

Environmental and wildlife concerns are being discussed in Science subjects but limited only protection and it would more effective to include the apprehension for violating the environmental laws, she said.

Calumpang appealed to Vice Gov. Jose Baldado to write to schools division superintendent, Dr. Milagros Velez, to furnish a copy of Provincial Ordinance 499 regulating the transport and use of air guns within the province, in support of the Wildlife Conservation Act.

Baldado welcomed the commitment of DepEd, saying this would compliment his program on Young Environment Stewards established in different high schools in the province.

Baldado said information and education campaign is important to expand the awareness on wildlife protection.*MA
