Election hotspot
declaration eyed
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Commission on Elections and the Philippine National Police are currently looking into possibilities that some areas in the province will be declared as areas of concern, because of hotly contested positions in the coming political exercise.

One of these areas is Bacong, the town next to Dumaguete City , where the former mayor will run against the incumbent, who was once his vice mayor.

The camp of incumbent Mayor Lenin Alviola had filed administrative and criminal charges against former mayor, Rodolfo Yee, before the Ombudsman for the Visayas, but all of these were decided in Yee's favor.

One case was filed by a dismissed municipal employee during Yee's term as mayor. Another case stemmed from the purchase of a new KIA engine for the municipality's ambulance in 2005.

Yee's lawyer, provincial attorney Erwin Vergara said the cases are a form of political harassment and oppression.*JG
