Investigation ordered
on ‘manhandling' case

Bacolod City Police officer-in-charge, Senior Supt. Celestino Guara, yesterday said that he has ordered an investigation on the allegation that Station 2 chief, Insp. Jeffrey Attunaga and his men Police Officers 2 Benjamin Jamora and Bienvinido Lombre manhandled the suspected car burglars they arrested Tuesday in the city.

Guara also encouraged the detainees to file complaints so the policemen could defend themselves.

Contacted by the DAILY STAR, Attunaga denied the allegations saying, that the detainees got their bruises when they climbed the roof of the houses in Brgy. 3 to evade arrest.

Jojo Arnaiz, 20, alias “Daku” and his 16-year-old brother claimed that they were hit with batons and were forced to admit they were responsible for a car burglary in the area of Station 2, where a .45 caliber pistol was stolen.

Their neighbor, Jimmy Silga, 47, of Purok Lubi, who was apprehended, along with Arnaiz and his brother after he allegedly helped them escape, claimed that he was also manhandled.

Silga said that he was made to kneel on salt and claimed that his face was covered with cellophane.

Attunaga reiterated they did not lay their hands on the detainees and, in fact, brought them to the hospital before they were detained. He also said they even prevented bystanders from mauling them after they were arrested on Tuesday.

Attunaga said Arnaiz and his brother should file formal complaints if they were, indeed, manhandled.

He said they were supposed to file robbery charges against Arnaiz and his companions yesterday after several hold-up victims came to identify them, but were not able to do so because they lack one affidavit from a complainant.

Like Attunaga, Jamora also denied the accusations of the detainees, saying that, as a warrant officer of their police station, he is always in the field.

Jamora said these detainees have already caused so much fear to many people in their area, because of their lawless activities.*APN
