Child-friendly cities,
towns get awards

The Children's Month celebration on the theme “Bright Child: Proteksyon ng Bata, Pananagutan ng Bansa!” in Negros Occidental culminated with the awarding of the Most Child-Friendly local government units and recognition of individual and institution partners, at the Governor's Hall of the Provincial Capitol, yesterday.

The month-long celebration was aimed to advocate and uphold the rights of children, to help meet their basic needs, and expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.

The activity was spearheaded by the Provincial Council for the Rights and Welfare of Children led by provincial Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president Jebmari Becaro, in collaboration with the Provincial Planning and Development Office.

The cities of San Carlos and Talisay, and municipality of Hinigaran were named most child-friendly cities and municipality in the province, respectively, awarded by Becaro and Board Member Mae Javellana, chairman of the Committee on Women, Family and Gender Equality, the press release said.

Meanwhile, on-the-spot essay writing contest winners were also awarded. They were Gibb Salgado of Ramon Torres (Sagasa) National High School , 1 st prize; Honey Lei Gelogo of Hinigaran National High School, 2 nd prize; and Christine Thel Geollegue of La Castellana National High School, 3 rd prize.

Individual and institutional partners given plaques of recognition were the Bacolod Girl's Home represented by Luz Dato Lacson, Salvador Acupan of Visayan Forum, Arlene Medina of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Faculty and Employees Labor Association, Celia Panaligan of the Provincial Health Office, and Merma Bayona of the PPDO, the press release added.*

Reflexology gab slated

Providing medical support and livelihood alternative to the barangay health workers and barangay health scholars will help in the fast delivery of medical services particularly in the remote areas of Bacolod City .

Aside from being an alternative means of medical assistance, reflexology also provides an option for livelihood, Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. said in a press release from his office.

The councilor, in cooperation with the City Government of Bacolod, through Mayor Evelio Leonardia, DAWIS/Kinderhome Inc., Abad-Santos Madrigal Foundation Inc., and Technical Education and Skills Training Development Authority, will hold a week-long Basic Reflexology Training Seminar on November 16 to 20, at BAYS Center , Bacolod .

The event initiated by Gamboa is the sixth time now since it started in March 10, 2008.

The DKI has been serving at least 100 children every year by supporting their educational needs, enhancing their preparation to socio-cultural and spiritual development, the press release said.

The ASMF, headed by Senator Jamby Madrigal, empowers women and children through relevant and accessible livelihood programs which flagship project is the Basic Reflexology Training Program and has trained more than 10,000 reflexology therapists nationwide, the press release added.*
