SANDUROT '09
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Barangay Cadawinonan bested four other contingents and was declared champion of the Dumaguete Sandurot Festival at the City Hall Quadrangle, recently.

Cadawinonan received P40,000 cash prize and a trophy and will represent Dumaguete City in the Buglasan Festival of Festivals of Negros Oriental in October next year.

The coastal barangay of Looc and Barangay Candau-ay were second and third place winners, and took home P30,000 and P20,000 in cash prize and trophy, respectively.

Looc also bagged four major awards as Best in Costume, Drum Corps, Best in Choreography, and Best in Streetdancing. Barangay Pulantubig won Best in Arc, and Barangay Daro was named Best in Sandurot King and Queen.

A major award had a corresponding cash prize of P5,000 and trophy. The Best in Streetdancing received P10,000.

Non-winning contingents took home P5,000 in consolation prize.

Chairperson Glynda Descuatan of the Sandurot Committee said the winning contingents were judged according to their performances in streetdancing and showdown competition.

The city government allocated a seed money of P120,000 for every contingent for the purchase of costumes, props, talent fee of trainors, and snacks during practice.

Sandurot Festival is one of the activities highlighting the annual twin celebration of the 61 st Charter Day of Dumaguete and the feast of St. Catherine of Alejandria, patron saint of the city.*MA
