The Department of Science and Technology is extending its scholarship applications until October 15 to give a chance to the deserving students to avail the scholarship, Allan Francis Dara-ug, provincial director of S and T said.
Dara-ug said that, as of Friday last week, they received and evaluated 531 applicants for both merit and open scholarship.
He said he is also expecting applicants from Calatrava, Candoni, Don Salvador Benedicto, and Hinoba-an both from private and public schools, and wants all the towns and cities in the province to be represented in the DOST scholarship.
This is also a chance for DOST to get students with high potential in the field of science and technology, Dara-ug said.
The DOST scholarship consists of the merit scholarship where the student belongs to the upper five percent of the high school graduating class, and the open scholarship where the priority is a poor, talented and deserving student from a family whose socio-economic status does not exceed the set values of certain indicators as approved by the Advisory Committee on the S and T Scholarships, Dara-ug added.
He also said that the student must be a member of the top five percent of the regular high school graduating class or a member of the graduating class of identified DOST-Science Education Institute or a recognized Department of Education science high school.
The University of St. La Salle and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos are the institutions identified by DOST-SEI for Bacolod City , based on the Commission on Higher Education Center of Excellence and Center of Development accreditation, Dara-ug said.
The others are the state colleges within the province like the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, he added.
Applicants can go to the S and T office or they can visit www.science –scholarships.ph for more information, he also said.*LTG
