7 fishermen rescued

Seven fishermen allegedly engaged in illegal fishing, were rescued by members of the Bantay Dagat after their boat capsized as they were fleeing from pursuing lawmen Friday at the Lacawon Reef in Brgy. Cadiz Viejo, Cadiz City , Negros Occidental.

Police Officer 2 Renante Billones yesterday said the seven crew members of M/V Shrine who were engaged in illegal fishing at in Cadiz City , tried to evade arrest by fleeing from Bantay Dagat members.

But as they were chased by pursuing Bantay Dagat members, the M/V Shrine capsized at the Lacawon Reef when their boat, after being battered by big waves and strong winds.

Billones said the seven fishermen they had rescued, are now in good health, after undergoing medical examinations.*GPB

Cops nab three for drugs

A suspected marijuana peddler and two others were arrested Friday by the police in the cities of Bacolod , San Carlos and Himamaylan, all in Negros Occidental, as police anti-narcotics units intensified their campaign against suppliers of prohibited drugs, with the onset of MassKara Festival.

Operatives of the Negros Occidental PNP Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force confiscated a small brick of dried marijuana leaves, 22 marijuana cigarettes and P1,939 in cash, from Reynaldo Jimenez, who was arrested during a buy-bust operation at Mabini-Gonzaga Streets, Brgy. 26, Bacolod City .

Chief Insp. Rico Santotome, AIDSOTF provincial chief, yesterday said Jimenez reportedly sold marijuana to out-of-school-youths and pedicab drivers in the barangay, at P20 per cigaret.

The NOPPO anti-narcotics unit was augmented by the Vice Control Section of the Bacolod City Police Office headed by SPO1 Dante Victor Escorpion, in an entrapment operation that led to the arrest of Jimenez who is now locked up in jail.

A team of policemen led by PO3 Edcel Villanuena also arrested Jeffrey Gonzaga, 37, in Brgy. 1, San Carlos City for having six sachets of suspected shabu.

Barangay tanod members also endorsed Jessirie Tabasa, 20, to the Himamaylan City Police Station, also for having dried marijuana leaves.

Brgy. Capt. Antonio Limsiaco told the police that the arrest of Tabasa was made by patrolling barangay tanods conducting routine check of revelers during the fiesta of Libacao in Himamaylan City .

Gonzaga and Tabara will be charged with illegal possession of drugs in court, within this week, police said.*GPB

Robbers take farm payroll

Seven armed robbers took P100,000 in payroll money from a farm secretary in Brgy. Ma-ao, Bago City , Negros Occidental, Friday.

The suspects, who were wearing bonnets and armed with handguns, waylaid the vehicle of Ma. Luz Guera, while she was on her way to Hacienda Begonia in the barangay, a police report said yesterday.

After taking the money, the suspects fled towards a sugarcane field. The victim, who was unhurt, reported the incident to the Ma-ao Community Police Assistance Center .

However, the suspects were nowhere to be found when policemen responded.*GPB
