Mayor thanks Bacoleños

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from Bacoleños that continues for the victims of tropical storm Ondoy, filling the second floor of the Bacolod City Hall with various kinds of relief goods given by the generous souls who heeded his appeal.

The donations still fill the city hall site although the city government had already shipped at least two container vans of relief goods for the Ondoy victims last week, a City Hall press release said.

Bacolod City was the first, if not one of the first, of the local government units who immediately responded to the request for donations made by the national government, it added.

Leonardia thanked the people who did not hesitate to share what they have with those who lost lives and property during the storm. He said the true spirit of the Bacoleños has again been demonstrated through their generosity and willingness to serve others.

The mayor also thanked the various civic and private groups who pooled their resources to gather donations, saying that the city government would not have been able to collect such a huge volume of donations if not for the help of the private and civic organizations who were more than willing to help, it added.

Aside from the relief goods consisting of clothing, medicines, slippers, and food, the city government has already received cash donations totaling more than P650,000 which was immediately endorsed to the ABS-CBN Foundation that facilitates the distribution of relief goods.

The City Government continues to accept donations for the Ondoy victims at the Bacolod City Hall through the Department of Social Services and Development.

On Friday, Leonardia also received donations from a group of Chinese volunteer teachers from Bacolod Tay Tung High School .

The group contributed a total of P13,154.10 with an additional P5,838 from the English Department of BTTHS.

The volunteer teachers, led by Lu Hai Yun, were Yan Cai Yun, Fan Yan Yan, Lai Ling Na, Yuan Li Li and Shi Jian Ming. They were accompanied by Andres Valencia and TayTung teacher Ruth Espiso.*
