Donations from generous citizens, businesses, and other sectors in Dumaguete and Negros Oriental continue unabated for victims of Typhoon Ondoy in Metro Manila and parts of Luzon .
Gov. Emilio Macias II announced at yesterday morning's flag rites that he will ask the Provincial Board to approve another P200,000 as financial assistance to areas submerged by floodwaters.
This brings to P300,000 the total cash assistance the province will be giving to the homeless victims of Typhoon Ondoy that devastated large parts of Metro Manila and Luzon on Sept. 26.
Macias first announced last week that the province will give P100,000 to Cainta and on Monday sought the Provincial Board for the allocation of P100,000 each to two more areas near Laguna de Bay.
Other donations like used clothes, canned goods, beddings, and food stuffs were also trickling in at the Capitol, provincial spokesperson Adrian Sedillo said.
The cash assistance will be given directly to the local government units concerned, while other donated items will be coursed through the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Other assistance for Ondoy victims are also being mobilized by churches, schools and private institutions in Dumaguete.
The Diocese of Dumaguete through the Commission on Youth will send their donations through the Episcopal Youth Commission in Manila , youth volunteer Risty Villahermosa said.
The donation campaign is supported by Bishop John Du of the Diocese of Dumaguete, who also urged the community to pray for the victims of typhoons and to continuously ask for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary as October 7 marks the day of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Silliman University is also sending cash donations and other items from students, faculty and staff. As of Monday, it has collected P35,000 from them.
Some P30,000 in cash was also received from students, dormitories, alumni and other members of the Silliman Community.*JFP
