West Negros University stretched its NOPSSCEA collegiate basketball championship run to 11 seasons last night after completing a two-game sweep of its title series against Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod at the CSA-B Gym in Bacolod City .
The Mustangs came away with a 96-81 triumph over the Eagles in Game 2, ensuring their title streak got another extension, a press release from the school said.
The Mustangs, drawing solid performances from their reserve players, pulled away late in Game 1 for an 89-75 at the WNU Gym.
WNU, which ruled the 2005 University Games title and the 2006 National Students Basketball Championship, finished the season unbeaten in 11 games.
“We thank God for this victory,” said WNU sports director Tony Agustin. “Hard-work, discipline and staying hungry even if we're still winning keyed our success this year.”
Agustin also commended the coaching staff, including first-year mentor Troy Sarabia for steering the Mustangs, who will now focus their efforts on making an impact in the upcoming Philippine Collegiate Champions League, the press release said.
“The victory is the testament to the support of the university to its basketball program,” said Sarabia, who also expressed gratitude to school officials, including university president Suzette Agustin.
The backcourt once again delivered for the Mustangs in Game 2 with Rolly Jaca, Jeff Jacinto and skipper Alfie Villariza teaming up to strike the telling blows.
Jaca sparkled as he finished with 16 points, while Villariza and Jacinto added 13 each for the Mustangs, who pulled away in the second quarter, 50-35.
“We knew we couldn't take them (Eagles) lightly so we came into the game with the mindset that we have to win,” Villariza, who won his fourth title as a WNU player, said in Ilonggo.
“We didn't want to be overconfident because we knew it will be difficult for us if it gets to Game 3,” he added.
In Game 1 last Saturday, the Mustangs squeezed the best out of role players Rushmore Catalino and 6-foot-4 Raul Suyod, who combined for 29 points. Jacinto also made a solid contribution with 15 points, while Villariza and Jaca came through with 13 and 10, respectively.*
