The Negros Occidental provincial government is initially allocating P300,000 to assist the Luzon typhoon-hit victims, Gov. Isidro Zayco said yesterday.
He said that, with the president's declaration of a state of national calamity, assistance can be allocated by local governments from their 5 percent calamity fund.
The League of Provinces is asking provincial governments to send their contributions to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for proper allocation to those in need, he said.
With the declaration of a state of national calamity, Zayco said the provincial government will also be able to use some of its calamity fund to buy rescue equipment.
“There is a suggestion that we purchase rubber boats for some of our towns and cities to help local rescue teams,” he said.
Manapla Mayor Manuel Escalante, president of the Negros Association of Chief Executives, had earlier said that the Negros ACE will allocate P100,000 from its funds on top of the amounts committed by the town and city mayors for the Luzon typhoon victims, he said.
At a mayors' meeting Friday it was agreed that all towns in Negros Occidental will allocate not less than P50,000 each for the typhoon relief fund, while the cities will allocate more, Escalante said.*CPG
