Ambulant vendors
to get support

BY ROMY AMARADO

The Department of Labor and Employment will extend livelihood support to selected ambulant vendors in the cities of Dumaguete and Bayawan, under the Nego Kart, or Negosyo Kariton, program.

Vivencio Lagahid, assistant chief employment officer in Negros Oriental, told the DAILY STAR that 20 ambulant vendors in Dumaguete and 13 in Bayawan will avail of the program. He said more than P400,000 has been set aside for its initial implementation.

He said Nego Kart is a special program of the DOLE in line with the poverty alleviation effort of the government.

Lagahid said these vendors are either renting pushcarts or just staying put in one place, while selling assorted items, like tempura, balut, peanuts, and candies,.

Under the program, he said the recipients will be the one to secure a pushcart, with the DOLE taking charge of paying for it. For each recipient, Lagahid said the DOLE is appropriating P13,000 for the push cart,  utensils and some items to be sold.

He said recipients of the program were identified by the city government in Dumaguete, while those in Bayawan City, were chosen by the Gawad Kalinga Fishermen’s Association.

The pushcarts will be distributed at the launching of the program on October 23.*RA
