Police Director Leopoldo Bataoil retires from the police service today, and may try to join politics as a congressional candidate in the second district of Pangasinan in the May 2010 elections.

Bataoil, who served as provincial police director of Negros Occidental from 1995 to 1998, said he will make a formal announcement soon.

Today, Bataoil turns 56, the mandatory age retirement for police and military personnel.

Deputy Director General Geary Barias yesterday said Bataoil will be replaced by Director Ronald Roderos as Police Community Relations chief.

Barias, Deputy Chief for Administration, said the position vacated by Roderos as chief of the Directorate for Research and Development will be taken over by Chief Supt. Benjie Belarmino.

If Bataoil joins politics, he will join the list of retired military and police generals trying their luck in politics next year.

Other retired police and military general eyeing elective positions are former PNP chiefs Avelino Razon and Arturo Lomibao, ex-AFP chief Hermogenes Esperon, retired Chief Supt. Joel Goltiao, while former Deputy Director General Reynaldo Velasco is seeking re-election as mayor of Santa Barbara town in Pangasinan.

Detained Brig. Gen Danilo Lim and Marine Col. Ariel Querubin, who are linked to destabilization attempts against the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, earlier signified their intention to run for senator in the May 2010 elections.*GPB
