SP inquires on
anti-GMO law status

A resolution inquiring from Bacolod City Agriculturist Goldwyn Nifras the status of City Ordinance 485, or the Anti-GMO Ordinance, specifically regarding the enforcement, creation of a special task force, laboratory equipment and the time table of its implementation in the city, has been passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Proposed by Councilor Alex Paglumotan, the resolution said C.O. 485 was approved by the SP on May 10, 2009 with all its provisions including the creation of a special task force for implementation, time frame, as well as, laboratory equipment to be acquired by the city as the concerned local government.

It said that while the time table is very explicit in the provisions of C.O. 485, the SP wants to make sure that the city is competent enough and more than ready for its implementation.

The resolution is also seeking recommendations from the City Agriculture Department regarding the mechanism to be applied by the city government in the implementation of the Anti-GMO Ordinance.

The SP also passed another resolution requiring all pawnshop operators, other similar stores licensed to do business in Bacolod City , as well as, persons engaged in buying and selling of second hand mobile or cellular phones, to first secure clearance from the police before buying the items.

Proposed by Councilor Catalino Alisbo, the resolution noted the numerous cases of hold-up and cellphone snatching in the city streets, so those engaged in buying and selling of second hand cellphones are required to observe certain guidelines and to seek permit or clearance from the nearest police station commander, to ensure that they do not violate the Anti-Fencing Law.

Another resolution regulating informal street dispatching activities, or “barking”, found in every public utility vehicle waiting areas in the city, was also passed by the SP Tuesday, authored by Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., chairman of the SP Committee on Transportation and Traffic Management.*CGS
