RP women pugs
compete in Hanoi

Even without any international exposure for the team this year, the RP women's boxing team hopes to deliver an impressive performance in the 3rd Asian Indoor Games which opened yesterday at the 40,000-seater My Dinh National Stadium.

For the first time, women's boxing is included in the AIG and Philippines will be fielding a tried and tested lady boxers as the lean delegation hopes to maintain string of gold medal production in the past two staging.

The country has so far won a total of two gold, two silver and five bronze medals during the 1st AIG held in Bangkok Thailand in 2005 and in Macau , China in 2007.

All the gold medals came from the sport of Muay which will also be sending a delegation and will compete at the Rach Mieu Gymnasium in Ho Chi Minh City .

Head coach Glicerio Catolico, who will be assisted by Barcelona Olympics bronze medalist Bagoeño Roel Velasco, said despite the lack of international exposure, the team is very much prepared.

Expected to bring honors to the country are pin weight Josie Gabuco, light flyweight Alice Kate Aparri, flyweight Annie Albania, bantamweight Nesty Peticio and featherweight Bacoleña Mitchel Martinez.

Albania and Martinez are veteran internationalist with the 27-year old Albania the lone gold medalist in the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand and a silver medalist in the World's Women's Boxing Championships last year in Nimbo, China, while Martinez is a former Asian champion and a silver medalist in the 2007 SEAG.*
