Dauin mayor:
We’re taxing resort owners

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Mayor Rodrigo Alanano said 14 foreigners own resorts and beaches in Dauin, but some of them use dummies as incorporators.

Most, if not all, of the foreshore areas in Dauin are now in the hands of foreigners who are engaged in the business of resorts and dive shops.

Alanano said he will take efforts to collect taxes from them.

He also said they have reason to believe some of these resorts and dive shops are not paying the right taxes due the government.

He said the resorts earn millions of pesos, but not even one-fourth of their gross income is declared.

He disclosed that these establishments buy tickets from the municipality at P200 per dive at the marine sanctuary and these tickets are sold at P2,500 to dive enthusiasts.

From January to July this year, the municipality earned P6.5 million from dive tickets alone.

With the data gathered in cooperation with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Alanano said he will not stop and will not give up until the foreigners pay the right taxes.

Alanano said one foreigner who is engaged in resorts and dive shops is presently establishing an upland resort with a different name, also using dummies.

It has 115 goats and more than 80 pigs without permits, and environmental compliance certificates, among others, he said.*JG
