University of St. La Salle men spikers remain on top of their game as they registered a 1-2 finish in men’s Class A category of the 1st Bro. Ceci Hojilla Memorial Cub Volleyball Championships at the USLS Covered Courts Saturday.
USLS-A, which swept all its three elimination assignments, bagged the crown after one hour and 55 minutes of five grueling sets against USLS-B.
Falling behind 23-25 in first set, USLS-A exerted extra effort in the second canto, refusing to back down from unceasing USLS-B attack to level the score at 1-1 with a strong 31-29 second set decision.
Faltering once again in the third set as USLS-B got back its rhythm, USLS-A found its back pushed against the wall as the set ended 17-25.
Summoning enough strength to once again tie the game and force deciding fifth set, USLS-A took control of the fourth set with a commanding 25-12 finish en route to a 15-13 final tally to clinch the win.
Settling for third place was UNO-Recoletos which defeated the Katherine Montelibano-mentored Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod in three straight sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18.
In women’s Class A, USLS retained the title by turning back UNO-R, 25-15, 25-13, 25-15.
Meanwhile, competition in men’s Class B showed MONO team challenging frontrunner and undefeated NCTV for the crown as of press time.
Led by former volleyball standouts Remo Banhao, Wilar Tubal, Alan Gomed and RP beach volleyball member Rodel Canino, MONO rose from third place after the elimination by crushing Bracket B No. 2-ranked Capitol, 25-21, 25-18, 25-12, then knocked out Bracket A top team Silay, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21.
In women’s Class B, St. John’s Institute alumni finished in third place after a come-from-behind five-setter victory Saturday against erstwhile tormentor Capitol Employees, 23-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-10.
The game lasted one hour and 50 minutes with the SJI avenging their five-set loss to the same squad.
Earlier, No. 2 team Sabado Club took the upperhand in women’s Class B competition by defeating No. 1 Silay, 25-8, 22-25, 25-12, 25-17. Still, Silay earned the right to challenge Sabado Club for the crown after getting past SJI Alumni, 25-14, 25-16, 25-18.*NAB
