University of St. La Salle men spikers remain on top of their game as they registered a 1-2 finish in men’s Class A category of the 1st Bro. Ceci Hojilla Memorial Cub Volleyball Championships at the USLS Covered Courts Saturday.

USLS-A, which swept all its three elimination assignments, bagged the crown after one hour and 55 minutes of five grueling sets against USLS-B.

Falling behind 23-25 in first set, USLS-A exerted extra effort in the second canto, refusing to back down from unceasing USLS-B attack to level the score at 1-1 with a strong 31-29 second set decision.

The Benitez-Gunawan tandem overtook in the standings the pair of Beijing Olympics semifinalist Marissa Vita and former US national player Eric Go despite finishing with an identical 4-1 win-loss card.

Vita and Go settled for first runner-up honors after demolishing Philippines’ Ricky Morales who partnered with Indonesian Kwee Tiek Ming, 21-9, 21-19.

BY NIDA BUENAFE

Department of Public Works and Highways-Talisay continued its winning ways by prevailing over the MONO Team, 91-80, to stay unbeaten in the 40-Up category of the LNA7 Basketball Tournament at the West Negros University gym in Bacolod City.

Panaad-Mang Inasal Striders also advanced to the next round with an emphatic 79-67 triumph over BAPRO in Saturday’s first game.  BAPRO trailed 14-17 in the first canto then hit rock bottom in the second quarter as the team failed to get its offense going, hitting a measly five points against Panaad’s 17 markers.

The Striders took the half, 48-31, and were never threatened as BAPRO played listlessly and fought among themselves by game’s end. With the win, Panaad stood at 3-3 win-loss card good for fifth while BAPRO dropped to sixth place with 2-4 record.
