More cracks
discovered in MPadilla

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

New cracks in the ground have  again been discovered – this time a kilometer long and one meter wide one in Sitio Coyaoyao, Brgy. Inolingan, Moises Padilla.

Moises Padilla Councilor Dolly Yasa yesterday said that Inolingan Brgy. Capt. Hilario Jolomar reported the cracks, but told them it is not as deep as those in Sitio Manaul in Brgy. Quintin Remo.

Landslides also occurred in another mountain, one adjacent to that in Sitio Manaul where a huge crack was discovered last month, Yasa said.

The landslide and land creeping in Brgy. Inolingan are believed to have been triggered by the continuous rains in the past several days.

Mayor Francisco Nazareno said residents of Brgy. Quintin Remo in Moies Padilla, have started to build canals to re-channel water from the newly-formed lakes.

Nazareno said affected sitio residents are still at the evacuation centers.

A team of geologists from the University of the Philippines, commissioned by Rep. Ignacio Arroyo to study the so-called phenomenon in Moises Padilla, said the occurrence of land creeping and landslides were induced by several days of heavy rains.

If the ground stabilizes, the place may be usable for farming, but no longer for habitation, they said.

A study made by the geologists also showed that the cracks in the ground had been noticed by the residents since the 1960s.*GPB
