Power plant loan hit

The Freedom from Debt Coalition-Negros, other non-government organizations, and individual electric consumers of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative are opposing the looming approval of a $120 million loan from the Asian Development Bank by the Korea Electric Power Corp. and the Salcon Power Corp.

The FDC said in a press release that it supports its counterpart, Cebu’s FDC Chapter and the Global Legal Action on Climate Change, in challenging the deal that will facilitate the construction of a 200-megawat coal-fired power plant in Naga, Cebu.

Rudy Yanson, FDC-Negros president, said in the press release that they have asked ADB through an open letter to reconsider and reject the loan application since it will support a project that will destroy the environment.
