Crop bio-agents
developed for organic produce

The Brgy. Daan Banwa, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, organic village is operating a bio control laboratory to produce agents for organic agriculture, Melba Bañares, Agriculturist II Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said.

Bañares said the village primarily produces trichograma, trichoderma, and natural farming system concoctions.

The trichograma is a type of insect that parasitize the eggs of the stem borers and other agricultural pests.

Trichograma has three specifications-the jeponicom used for rice crops, evanescence for corn crops, and the chilones for the fruits and vegetables, Bañares said.

The trichoderma, meanwhile, is present in nearly all soils and other diverse habitats. It is used as a decomposer and fertilizer for soil-borne diseases, she said.

These two organic products will prevent pests and insects to develop in the crops.

At an early stage of using these agents, it can eliminate the rapid growth of the pests, Bañares added.

The trichograma is sold at P6 per strip. One hectare of rice and corn is uses 100 strips and 150 for the vegetable plantation while the trichoderma is sold at P20 per bottle.

For every hectare, 20 bottles of trichoderma is applied, Bañares also said.

Bañares said the NFS concoction can be a fermented fruit or plant juice.

Every one liter of water a 2-tablespoon concoction is added.

She said that using these organic products assures that until the harvest period, farmers are able to produce healthy agricultural products without residual toxicity intake.

Aside from these bio control agents, the organic village also implements tilapia dispersal, organic swine fattening, and rice and seed production, she added.*LTG
