BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Police arrested four murder suspects Saturday afternoon, barely two days after the killing of three family members and the wounding of a child in Barangay Cancawas in San Jose, Negros Oriental, Thursday evening.

Sheryll Ramirez, 18, and her live-in partner Ronnie Gerodias, 24, were hacked to death, while their 4-year-old daughter survived the attack but sustained a hack wound on her head, the police said.

A fourth victim, 17-year-old Jury Ramirez, younger brother of Sheryll, was also found dead  due to multiple hack wounds inside the house of a neighbor, Carlito Sablada, situated about 100 meters from the crime scene.

IPHO aims to decrease
maternal mortality rate
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Integrated Provincial Health Office, through the Provincial Nutrition Council, aims to continuously reduce the maternal mortality rate in Negros Oriental.

Dr. Edgardo Barredo, who leads the Provincial Nutrition Council, said one of the factors they want to address is the nutrition aspect, noting that the majority of mothers who died after childbirth, suffered from the lack of proper nutrition.

Other reasons for maternal mortality are post partum bleeding, hemorrhage due to non-contraction of the uterus, and lack of pre-natal care, he said.

participate in shootfest

An estimated 200 shooting enthusiasts and members of the Philippine National Police in Negros Oriental  participated in the two-day weekend 1st PNP Provincial Director’s Shootfest, held in collaboration with the Dumaguete Shootists’ Association headed by its president, businessman Roy Cang.

During a brief opening program on Saturday, PNP provincial director, Sr. Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas, stressed that one of the objectives of the shooting competition is to foster camaraderie, and strengthen cooperation and fellowship between members of the police organization and the civilian populace.

This is in line with the government’s thrust of private and public partnership, he said.
