PALARONG TERCER DISTRITO
Talisay Green Dragons
score back-to-back wins

The Green Dragons of Talisay City successfully defended their turf as they turned back the visiting Victorias City then humbled home team E.B. Magalona the next day to register back-to-back victories in basketball 40-Up and Open categories of the 1st Cong. Albee Cup Palarong Tercer Distrito.

Before the homecrowd inside the Talisay Gym, the 40-Up Green Dragons outscored the visiting Victorias squad in the final quarter for a 103-85 win.

Down by five points at halftime, 42-47, the host team went on a 61-point rampage in the second half with Edwin Cuenco and Arselito Belonio combining for 14 points to lead the surge in the third quarter.

Pacquiao-Marquez fight
looms as record breaker

Top Rank director Brad Jacobs said that he expects the third encounter between world boxing icon Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez come November would surpass the previous all time record of $ 1.4 million earnings of Pacquiao-starred pay-per-view fights.

In yesterday’s Philippine Sportswriters Forum in Manila, Jacobs said “all the ingredients of a great fight like 38-year-old Marquez's age, his having had lesser fights, his determination to prove that he has won their two previous meetings, comparison of their skills and talent, speed and fanfare are present in what you might call their penultimate meeting to attract greater number of viewers."

He added that in boxing, a boxer might be 40 years old but still durable, while a young man of 25 would be finished at an early age simply because he does not know how to take care of himself and does not have the talent to box.

New star emerges
in hurdles debris

Thrilling and controversial, an incident-packed world 110m hurdles final lived up to its billing by producing a dramatic disqualification for the Olympic champion -- and a new star.

In Monday's first ever meeting in a global final between the three fastest sprint hurdlers of all time -- Dayron Robles, Liu Xiang and David Oliver -- it was Jason Richardson who emerged with the gold after the dust had settled.

A day after defending champion Usain Bolt saw his 100m dream shattered after sensationally false-starting, the worlds were again rocked as another of the biggest stars in athletics was stripped of his medal for obstruction.
