Muslims in Negros Occidental marked the end of Ramadan yesterday with prayers for lasting peace to prosper and for sins to be forgiven, Imam Omar Betita of the Al Dhikr Islamic Center in Bacolod said.

They hope the peace talks between the government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front finally succeed, so that war will end in Mindanao, Betita also said.

He stressed the need for sincerity on the part of government to fulfill its commitments.

Betita said they celebrated Eid al-Fitr that marks the end of Ramadan at their center in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod, with prayers yesterday morning, snacks and a program.

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity," while Fiṭr means "breaking (the fast)".

During Ramadan participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex with their partners during daylight hours, to teach Muslims about patience, spirituality, humility and submissiveness to Allah.*CPG
